Memory Walk Sun 18th Sept 2011 by Chaldon Rise

27th September 2011

After all the recent rain we wondered if we were going to be unlucky with the weather. But we needn’t have worried. The sun shone, and it was a perfect day for a walk in the countryside. And even better knowing that we, along with more than 300 others, were supporting the work of the Alzheimer’s Society, something close to all our hearts. 6 of us met up in a local pub for a quick coffee before walking over to register and don our T-Shirts. We then met up with the 7th person in our party and at 11:30am precisely were led out of the field by The Hogsback Chapter of the Harley Davidson bikers and the walk through the Surrey Hills countryside was underway. Down quiet country lanes, over stiles and through fields of corn we were at the half-way stage before we knew it. There we were met with very welcome bottles of iced water. Here, too, our two canine friends were able to quench their thirst. Then it was off again on the homeward stretch, reaching the highest part of the walk where we could stop for a moment and take in the beautiful view of the South Downs and beyond. Returning to the Green by 1:30pm we were presented with medals before being “royally” entertained by the King himself – Elvis tribute artist Paul Ritchie - whilst tucking in to a hearty BBQ run by Caterham Scouts, and beer from the Hogsback Brewery. The following morning a few stiff muscles were on show, but any slight discomfort was soon overshadowed by the news that we have raised in excess of £400 – with some monies still to come in.
